Using Your Buddhist Prayer Beads For Meditation

Like many other prayer beads used in religions worldwide, Tibetan prayer beads or mala beads are similar. Malas are used for the spiritual practice known as “japa” which is the meditative repetition of a mantra or a divine name. Mala is a Sanskrit word meaning “garland.” Mala beads are used to keep count of your mantra repetitions.

Traditionally in Tibetan Buddhism, malas with 108 counting beads are used. Each bead can either be 6mm or 8mm. The 109th bead is referred to as the guru bead or “Buddha” bead and this signifies the end of one round in the prayer circle. The guru bead is the larger one at the end of the necklace. It’s there to remind you why you are meditating and control your intentions. The spacer beads or “marker” beads help you to keep track of where you are during your meditation.

Firstly, always keep in mind that your beads need to be held gently and with respect.  Deciding whether you will be reciting mantras, sacred phrases or counting breaths is totally up to you. Find a quiet, comfortable place to practice. You can either kneel or sit. Place them in your dominant hand and start reciting your mantra from the bead to the right of the guru bead. The tassel should be facing in your direction.

Then using your thumb to move the beads, move clockwise around the mala. For each recitation of your mantra, you need to count one bead. Hold the first bead between your thumb and index finger and whenever you recite the mantra, move from one bead to the next by rolling them through your fingers.
